Berlin local public transport

Email this article
 Printer friendly page

Berlin has a fully integrated public transport system carrying around 5 million passengers a day.  This network enables you to travel by bus, tram, metro and underground using the same ticket.

Although ownership of the various modes of transport is split between a number of organisations, they all work together as members of the Berlin and Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB).

The modes of transport that comes under the VBB umbrella include:

regional railways, indicated at stations by a large red letter B inside a red square
trams, represented by the international word tram in white on a red background
an underground railway network, symbolised by a while letter U on a blue background
and a metro, or urban light railway system, the S-Bahn, for which the sign is a white S in a solid green circle

All four systems are well integrated and timed, wherever possible, to coincide with each other at key stops.  The underground and the S-Bahn, in particular, have a good deal of overlap, with many stations serving both transport systems.

Zones

Berlin is split into three travel zones: A, B and C.  A is the central area; B takes in the outskirts, including Tegel airport and the Olympic Stadium; C covers further outlying areas, including Schönefeld airport.  The same ticket can be used on all forms of local public transport in Berlin.
