Das Rathaus - The Town Hall For better or worse, an example of early 1960s architecture, this 24-floor tower block dominates the town centre. Opened in 1968, the Kaiserslautern team celebrated winning the German Championship from its balcony in 1991 and 1998. There is a bistro bar / restaurant on the 21st floor called "Twenty-one" - good spot to get a panoramic view of the area.  Entrance is via the town hall, from Maxstrasse.
It's open weekdays 11 to around 2.30 and again from 6pm.  Weekends evenings only from 6. The menu is varied, the clientele fairly posh.
		The Fruchthalle The name means 'Fruit Hall' and as that suggests, this building - or at least the ground floor - used to be part of the town's fruit market (which actually sold mainly corn).
Kaiserslautern received its charter as a market town as far back as 885 and nearly 1,000 years later, the Fruchthalle was built.  The foundation stone was laid in 1843 and the hall was opened in 1846.  However, almost as soon as it opened, its significance began to wane as the advent of the railway in the region meant that market produce could be easily transported far and wide.  Since then the interior of the building has been converted and re-converted on many occasions, but the main ceremonial hall (the Festsaal) has retained its original splendour. Today the Festsaal is a venue for exhibitions, conferences and concerts.
