In the qualifying zone for North and Central America and the Caribbean an initial cup competition is followed by a league system in 3 groups of 4.
The winners and runner-up then play each other again on a league basis home and away, with the top 3 teams qualifying for the World Cup finals.
The fourth-placed side plays off with the fifth-placed Asian team.
