Dortmund's own airport is relatively small, used in the main by low-cost airlines, such as easyJet and Air Berlin.  However the state of North Rhine Westphalia is served by numerous other airports, including the major international ones at Düsseldorf (DUS) and Cologne (CGN).  The map below shows the location of these in relation to Dortmund (DTM).

From Dortmund airport there is a shuttle bus service to Dortmund main station.  This runs regulalry during airport business hours, takes about 25 minutes to get there and costs €5 for adults (Dec '04).  There is also a free shuttle bus to the nearby Holzwickede railway station.  The journey takes just 5 minutes and buses run every 15 mintues from 5am to 11pm, with 8 trains an hour from the station to major mainline hubs at Dortmund's main station and at Hamm.

Airport location
Dortmund airport is located to the east of central Dortmund, just north of the B1 'Ruhrschnellweg', which runs rights past the Westfalen Stadium.  From the A1 motorway, take the Dortmund/Unna exit, join the B1 and then take the Holzwickede / Dortmund Flughafen exit. Location map

Düsseldorf International
By far the largest airport nearby is Düsseldorf International, about one hour's drive away.

Other airports in the region are (clockwise on the map above): Münster / Osnabruck (FMO), Paderborn / Lippstadt (PAD), Siegerland (SGE), Cologne / Bonn (CGN), Mönchengladbach (MGL), Essen (ESS) and Weeze (NRN).

Düsseldorf International
This is the major airport in North-West Germany. In terms of internal connections to World Cup destinations, you can get flights from here to Munich (with
Air Berlin and DBA), Nuremberg and Stuttgart (withAir Berlin) and Berlin (with DBA). Airlines such as Star Alliance partners Lufthansa and United Airlines provide numerous international links, while Air France also fly here from Paris, KLM from Amsterdam and British Airways from Birmingham, Heathrow and Manchester.
