Berlin is Germany's capital, its largest city, with a population of over 3 million and the venue for the 2006 World Cup Final on 9th July.

Berlin is a city state, located on the rivers Spree and Havel in the northeast of Germany, encircled by the state (Bundesland) of Brandenburg. Its location makes it fairly isolated from many of the other World Cup venues, but it's well served by road, rail and air.

Berlin was first formed around 1200 as two cities, Berlin and Cölln, only uniting in 1307. Not much is left today of these old communities, although the city has had a rich and varied history.

On 13th August 1961, the Berlin Wall was constructed, splitting the city in two.
The wall fell on 9th November 1989, and by the time West and East Germany were formally reunified in 1990, most of it had vanished for ever. Some short sections, however, do remain and are amongst the city's best known tourist attractions. |
