Good connections Despite Hamburg's official website appearing to promote four other regional airports rather than its own, Hamburg airport has in fact been around longer than any in Germany today. In World Cup terms it offers direct flights to and from 5 of the other venues: Nuremberg (with Air Berlin), Leipzig (with Cirrus), Munich (DBA), Cologne ( HLX) and Stuttgart (with various airlines).
Direct flights also to/from Paris (Air France ), Dublin ( HLX), London, Amsterdam (both Lufthansa), and 3 other UK cities, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. |

Location Hamburg airport is situated to the north of the city, just five miles as the crow flies from the AOL Arena. Map of the area (when map opens, choose 'Calculate route' and enter 'Flughafenstr, 22335, Hamburg' and 'Sylvesterallee, 22335, Hamburg' as start and destination for the route). |

Airport to the Arena You can take public transport, but it involves 2 buses, the underground and a 10 minute walk and takes almost an hour. If there are no special buses laid on for World Cup - which I expect there will be - a taxi would probably be better, and wouldn't cost that much. If you do want to use public transport, click here (click the flag for English) and enter your start and destination as 'Flughafen' and 'AOL Arena' respecitvely. |

Airport to the city centre There's no underground (U-Bahn) or metro (S-Bahn) link to the airport, so it's back to buses. The best is the Aiport Express, running every 15 / 20 minutes from early to late between the airport and the main station. An Airport Express (no. 110) also runs to/from the nearest U / S-Bahn station at Ohlsdorf. Airport Express (German only). |
|
Other aiports As the official City of Hamburg website points out, there are other airports serving the general region. The Irish low-cost airline, Ryanair, for instance uses Lübeck - Blankensee with a shuttle bus running to / from Hamburg in time with their flights (takes c. 1hr 15 mins and costs 8 euros).
Others are Bremen Airport (about 80 miles away), the Baltic Airport at Schwerin/Parchim (only has flights to Mallorca, Bulgaria and Gran Canaria) and Hanover Airport (a good 100 miles away). |
