Ajax ruin big day Leipzig football got its 90 minutes of fame on the international stage on 13 May 1987, when Lokomotive Leipzig appeared in the European Cup Winners' Cup final against Johann Cryuff and co. from Ajax. However, the Dutch side went on to win the game 1-0 with a goal from Marco van Basten. |

Leipzig football's only other minor European success was in 1974, when Lokomotive reached the semi-final of the UEFA Cup.
All of the city's post-war footballing success dates from the East German era, the years between 1949 and 1990. |

DDR heyday Lokomotive won the East German Cup in 1976, '81, '86 and '87, while BSG Chemie (later Sachsen-Leipzig) won it in 1966. BSG Chemie also won the East German Championship in 1951 and 1966. |
Early success In the years before the First World War, VfB Leipzig were a major force in German football, taking the title in 1903, '06 and '13, and coming runners-up in 1904, '11 and '14. Between the wars, the club also took the German Cup in 1936.
