Tempelhof International Airport, (Flughafen Berlin Tempelhof) is situated to the south of the city centre.
The historic airport was opened in 1923. In its early years, it served as a base for Zeppelin airships as well as planes, while it achieved it greatest fame during the Berlin blockade of 1948/49.

With the western sectors of Berlin closed off by the Soviets, over 195,000 flights were made into Tempelhof from the West to bring essential supplies to the stricken city.
Today, there is a monument to the 'Luftbrücke' (air bridge) next to the airport.
Tempelhof now caters mainly for commuter flights to other parts of Germany and neighbouring countries, as its runway is too small for modern jumbo jets.
As part of the expansion of Schönefeld airport and the plans to turn it into Berlin Brandenberg International, Tempelhof will have closed by the time of the World Cup in 2006.
