Stuttgart : Stadium

Gottlieb Daimler Stadium

Email this article
 Printer friendly page
The Gottlieb Daimler Stadium was built in 1933 as the 'Adolf Hitler Arena' and was known from 1949 to 1993 as the 'Neckar Stadium'.  The stadium is now named after the 19th century motor car pioneer.  DaimlerChrysler is still based in the area today, and a new 'Mercedes World' museum will open next to the ground in early 2006.
Not a pure football stadium
The stadium is located in the Bad Cannstatt district of Stuttgart.  As well as being home to the local football club, it is also used for athletics meetings and staged, for instance, the 1993 World Athletics Championship... which makes it less than ideal for footy!
54,000 capacity
Capacity for Bundesliga games is c. 57,000, when the popular end (shown right) and a small section for away fans are used as standing areas.  In all-seater configuration for the World Cup, capacity will be reduced to c. 54,000.
