Wolfgang Overath
Currently the club chairman. Won the World Cup with Germany in 1974 and the German title with Cologne in 1964. He played a total of 765 games for Cologne, scoring 287 goals. For the national side he won 81 caps and scored 17 goals.
Christoph Daum
Former manager driven out of Germany in disgrace after traces of cocaine were found in a sample of his hair in the year 2000. He took Cologne to second spot in the league in 1989 and 1990, won the title with Stuttgart in 1992, the Turkish cup (1994) and league (1995) with Besiktas, came second in the German league with Bayer Leverkusen in 1997, 1999 and 2000, won the Austrian league and cup with Austria Wien in 2003 and became Turkish champions with Fenerbache in 2004 and 2005. He has been talked about as a potential German national team manager, but this has so far been ruled out as, although a court case into the cocaine allegations found him not guilty, he was seen as having publicly lied.
Harald 'Toni' Schumacher
Goalkeeper who played more games for Cologne than any other player to date in the Bundesliga, a total of 422. As successor to Sepp Maier in the national side, he also played 76 times for his country. He won the league title with Cologne, the European Championship with Germany and was also twice on the losing side in World Cup finals in 1982 and 1986. He is best known outside Germany for lunging Kung Fu style at France's Patrick Battiston in a one-on-one challenge 25 yards off his line in the 1982 World Cup semi-final. While Battiston was knocked unconscious and lost several teeth, Schumacher escaped without even a booking.
Rainer Bonhof
Spent three seasons with Cologne at the end of his playing career (having spent most of his early years with Borussia Mönchengladbach). Won the German cup with Cologne in 1983. Played a total of 53 times for Germany and was a member of the 1974 World Cup winning team (the then youngest German player ever to win a World Cup winner's medal). Now a coach, currently training the Scottish Under 21s.
Pierre Littbarski
Bandy-legged attacking midfielder who played a total of 406 Bundesliga games for Cologne, scoring 166 goals. Also turned out 73 times for Germany, scoring 18 goals, and was a member of the World Cup winning side in 1990.
Tony Woodcock
Became only the second English player (after Kevin Keegan at HSV) to play in Germany when he was transferred form Nottingham Forest to Cologne for a then record fee of 2.5 million Deutschmarks. In two spells with Cologne (1979-82 and 1986-88) he played 130 games and scored 39 goals. He also played 42 times for England, scoring 16 goals. |
