Old Town Hall, 'Hole', 'Beautiful Fountain' & more...

The 'Hole Prison' is the town hall's main tourist attraction, with its 12 medieval dungeon cells and a torture chamber.  Open 10am to 4.30pm Tues.- Sun. in summer. More info: City museums website or Nuremberg Tourist Office site.

An interesting and picturesque view in the heart of Nuremberg's old town is presented by the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, which in part spans the River Pegnitz. The hospital was originally built from 1332-1339, with the extension over the river added in the 16th century. Today more of a photo opportunity than somewhere to visit. Info:

The fountain is famous with tourists for its golden ring.  The ring is fitted within the iron railings that surround the fountain and appears to have no join. It can be revolved by hand, and legend has it that by doing so your wishes can come true!  The boy above was no doubt wishing for his team to win!

Nuremberg's old town hall (Altes Rathaus) is situated in the old town just down the hill from the castle and the Dürer House.  The oldest part  was built in 1332-1340.  Nearly three hundred years later (1616-22), the architect Jakob Wolff gave it the partial look of an Italian palace, with strong horizontal lines along its imposing facade. The building was gutted by fire following air raids in 1945 and only rebuilt in 1956.

The 'Beautiful Fountain' (Der Schöne Brunnen) stands across from the Frauenkirhce (Church of Our Lady), pictured below, on the main market square.  The fountain was originally erected in 1385-96 and restored many times over its subsequent life.  What you see today is a copy dating from the early 1900s.  What little remains of the original is kept at the Germanic National Museum.
