Ground capacities

The table below shows the 12 World Cup venues ranked by 'sellable ticket capacity' for the finals tournament.

The Frankenstadion in Nuremberg - The smallest stadium being used

The left-hand column shows the ground's normal capacity for Bundesliga games.  As this often includes terracing which is converted into seating for European competition and internationals, the second column shows the reduced capacity in all-seater configuration (for some stadia, such as the Allianz Arena in Munich, this figure does not change, as they use permanent tip-up seats in these areas and allow one person to stand at each seat).

The third column is 'gross capacity' as defined by FIFA for the finals, and the fourth column is what FIFA have definded as the number of 'sellable tickets' in each stadium for group stages matches.

The final column shows how many tickets are represented by 8% of the sellable number, i.e. the number of tickets to be officially allocated by FIFA to each of the national associations of the two teams playing in each game.

Key
The World Cup capacity is defined by FIFA as "the Gross Capacity less the seats that can't be used due to view obstruction and security/contingency reserves for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. This capacity is estimated and may change once these deductions are finally determined".

The sellable number of tickets is defined by FIFA as "the Total Seating Capacity less tickets reserved for the media and press, the VIP requirements and complimentary tickets. This capacity is based on maximum media requirements and may change once these requirements are finally determined". The sellable number shown here applies to group stage matches. Numbers differ slightly for the knock-out games.

The Allianz Arena in Munich - Arguably the most impressive of the stadia
