The Residenz The Residenz, not far from the Hofbräuhaus, was the former royal residence of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings. A mix of styles The complex of buildings consists of ten courtyards and 130 rooms bulit over a period of five centuries. The three main parts are the Königsbau (near the Max-Joseph-Platz), the Alte Residenz (towards the Residenzstraße) and the Festsaalbau towards the Hofgarten). The Residenz grew over the centuries and combines the styles of the late Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Classicism. |

Dates from 1385 The first buildings on this site were erected in 1385. The dimensions of the buildings seen today are from the era of Ludwig I of Bavaria, who instructed his architect Leo von Klenze to build the Königsbau, the Festsaalbau and the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche in the style of the Florentine Palazzo Pitti. |

Golden treasures The Schatzkammer (treasure chamber) contains some unique goldsmith's works of art from the Middle Ages through to the Classicist era.
Open daily 9am-6pm April to mid-October, 10am-4pm during the winter. Admission €6 (2005), with free audio guide (in English). |
