Jamie McDine's Englishman's guide to what makes Germany different

Part G: Time for tea

The great English cuppa!

Whether it’s at half-time in the pouring rain, with a biscuit as you wake up or to wash down a steak and kidney pie, sometimes you just cant beat a nice cup of tea. However, getting hold of a cup of Rosie Lee in Germany is not as easy as you would think.

Don't expect milk in your tea!
Kaffee und Kuchen
In the majority of cafes, they like their coffee and gateaux (Kaffee und Kuchen) and have plenty of varieties of coffee available, plus fruit and herbal tea.  But an English tea, or in fact any tea with milk, is quite rare.  So if you are fond of the drink that made our nation great, then it is best to bring some tea bags with you.

Tea-making facilities
In most hotels and guest houses in Germany, you will find it is quite rare to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room.  However, hosts will probably be able to provide you with a cup of boiling water for your tea.  But if you don’t want to take that risk, perhaps this World Cup could see the largest number of Thermos flasks ever brought across to mainland Europe!
