Jamie McDine's Englishman's guide to what makes Germany different
Part J: Up before the beak
Strange laws
Who would have thought that washing the car or cutting the lawn could get you into so much trouble? There are several laws in Germany that are different to those in the UK, so it’s important to familiarise yourself with this section before you travel to the World Cup.

| Mowing the lawn could be a trap! |
1 - Washing the car
You are not allowed to wash your car in the street or anywhere else, unless it is on property that you own. There are plenty of car washes at petrol stations, so if you’ve got to get the dirt off, then use one of these.
2 - Mowing the lawn
If your landlady asks for a hand to mow the lawn on a Sunday, she’s either crazy or it’s a trap! Sunday is a quiet day in Germany and anything such as mowing the lawn is simply not allowed.
3 - Hanging out the washing
If you've washed your England shirt and want to get it dry in time for the next game that’s fine, just make sure you don’t hang it outdoors on a Sunday.
4 - Vacuum cleaning
Germany has “quiet hours” between 12-3 in the daytime and after 10 at night, which means no loud music or vacuum cleaning as a general rule during these periods. Shame, isn't it - you'll have to leave hoovering the flat you've rented for someone else to do!
