Tips from local fans - 1

The fan liaison officer in Berlin did a great job by passing on our questionnaire to lots of Hertha fans clubs and posting the questions on their forum.

Steady flow of responses
We have therefore been getting a steady flow of answers.  Below and on the following pages are the responses received to date.

Thanks to the fans of Hertha Berlin

Where's the best place to go for a drink before the game?  Which are the five best pubs near the ground?

Sören: (1) Hanne am Zoo - Berlin's oldest and best football pub. (Run by an ex-Hertha and Bayern player - Ed. Hanne am Zoo website in German).  It's right next to the Zoo station.  Be sure to bring a scarf or a pennant with you from your own club - they hang everything up, so your club will be immortalised in Berlin! (2) Tiergartenquelle - right next to the 'Tiergarten' S-Bahn station.  Very small, but very nice and also cheap! (Insider Tour review). (3) Bierbrunnen in Alt-Moabit.  Very small, but cheap too.  It's our fan club's pub, with lots of football things on the wall and pleasant, pretty service!

Alex: Before Bundesliga games we normally have a beer at one of the stands set up around the ground.  Whether they'll have those for the World Cup, I'm not sure.  There are also three pubs you could try on Flatowallee (Flatov Avenue), the Stadion Terrassen (web page in German, with map) the Schultheiss am Olympiastadion and the Preussisches Landwirtshaus (German website) one or two of which also have a beer garden.

Andrea: There aren't that many pubs right next to the ground, but it's not far by metro or underground from the Zoo station to the Olympic Stadium, so I'll give you a few pubs on the Kurfürstendamm.  (1) Hanne am Zoo; (2) The Irish Pub in the Europa Center (Europa Center website, with photo); (3) There are also lots of pubs in the Spandau old town area (easy to get to from the stadium); (4) The pub in Ruhleben station (one stop with the underground from the stadium); (5) Near the stadium itself: the Stadion-Terrassen.

Gunnar: Stadion-Terrassen.  Actually, we don't often go to the pub before a game.  We tend to meet up instead at one of the numerous sausage stands around the ground.

Pepsi-Peppy: Stadionterassen right by the ground!

Joël: There's not much near the ground.  The Schleusenkrug in the Tiergarten is a great place (website in German).  It's between the Tiergarten and Zoologischer Garten S-Bahn stations.

Which are the best pubs in the city centre for meeting other fans and chatting about football?

Sören: (1) Beersalon on the Ku'damm (website in German); (2) Irish Pub in the Europa Center on the Ku'damm; (3) Lindenbräu in the Sony Center (website in English), where they still brew their own beer - very tasty, and always full!

Markus: Holst am Zoo (aka Hanne am Zoo, Ed.)

Alex: There are loads of pubs, including numerous Irish ones, where the main thing that is shown is English football.  As far as typical German football pubs go, then there's Hanne am Zoo, at 1-3 Joachimstrasse, near to the Zoo station in Charlottenburg and in Kreuzberg, the Kreuzkeller at 17 Yorckstrasse (website in German), where they are big into football and rock music.

Andrea: See above.

Gunnar: Hanne am Zoo; the Hertha BSC club pub; Alex Kruse's pub; the Prater Biergarten!! (website in German)

Pepsi-Peppy: Beersaloon, Q-Dorf (website in German) and the Irish Pub - all on the Ku'damm.

Joël: Bar 11, Wiener Strasse (near Görlitzer S-Bahn station).
