An overview of Leipzig
Leipzig is a fascinating mix of the old East and the modern West. For 40 years part of East Germany, the city has been transformed since reunification, but even now some signs of former neglect remain. However it's a city with great ambition - they tried for the 2012 Olympics, have built a brand new stadium and now have the World Cup to look forward to.

Central Stadium, Leipzig
Leipzig's 'Zentralstadion', or Central Stadium, is an interesting mix of old and new. A new millennium structure nestling within a post-war, former eastern bloc concrete bowl of a sports stadium. The new 45,000 all-seater ground actually sits inside the old 100,000 capacity bowl, built on a ringed mound of wartime rubble.

Host club
FC Sachsen Leipzig
To be honest, it's stretching things a bit to call FC Sachsen Leipzig the host club - they've only played their own games at the stadium since 2004.
However, it's a good opportunity for a little lesson on what happened to football in East Germany during the Cold War period and how the beautiful game is now shaping up in the city of Leipzig.

Leipzig fan park
The fan park in Leipzig is going to be on Augustplatz, about 100 yards from the main station ... as a landmark, just look out for the triangular peak atop the university tower block at the side of the square.

Stadium gallery 1
The Central Stadium in Leipzig is a unique mixture of old and new. This collage of photos shows how the exterior of the old, bombastic post-war sports stadium has been retained as the outer surround of the new ultra-modern football ground now nestled within it.
