The World Cup in Germany.com City During the Berlin Airlift in 1948 the longest runway in Europe was built at Tegel. Subsequently, Tegel became the main airport hub for West Berlin, replacing Tempelhof, where the runways were too short for modern jumbo jets. In line with plans to replace the three current airports in Berlin with just one major airport for whole area, Schönefeld is to become Berlin Brandenberg International during the course of this decade. Tegel will close about six months after operations begin at BBI (planned for some time in 2007). From Tegel Airport to central Berlin
There is no metro or underground station at the airport. Most passengers using public transport travel into the city by taxi or bus. As the airport is only 5km from the city centre, taxi fares are reasonable (around €20). Alternatively, there are numerous bus connections either direct to city centre destinations or to convenient metro (S-Bahn) and underground stations. From Tegel Airport to Zoologischer Garten
There is one obvious route straight to this major underground, metro and mainline station, also known as Zoo Bahnhof: Take the X9 bus direct to Zoologischer Garten.
