Three cities at the group stage that are by no means close to each other (Cologne to Leipizig is over 300 miles and Leipzig to Stuttgart only a mile or two less), but Cologne stands out overall as the best place to base yourself.

Stuttgart is in the south west, Leipzig over in the old East Germany and Cologne up in the north west.  If your team wins the group, a Cologne base would work well, with the first knock-out game in Cologne itself, the semi-final just 60 miles away in Dortmund, and the quarter-final not too distant either - in relative terms, at least - (212 miles away) in Hamburg.  On the other hand, if you think your team will come second in the group, you may want to consider Stuttgart - but otherwise, both this city and Leipzig are a bit out on a limb.

While Stuttgart is down in the south west, Dortmund and Hanover are much further up north, Dortmund a bit off to the west and Hanover fairly central.  With later games potentially in Cologne, Hamburg and/or back in Dortmund and/or Hanover - all what might be termed 'northern' grounds - setting up base in one of these two cities would make a lot of sense.

OK, so this one is a 'central' Germany grouping... but that doesn't mean the grounds are really close together!  For the group stage, it's 250 miles from Frankfurt (the south-west point of the triangle) to Leipzig (the south-east point) and about 225 to Hanover (the northern tip).

With a possible return to Hanover and Frankfurt if your team comes second in the group, you could pick either city for your base, while if you think your team is bound to win the group, plump for Hanover, as it's a lot closer than Frankfurt to Cologne, Hamburg and Dortmund.

Two grounds here at the group stage pretty close to each other - it's only 60 miles from Cologne to Dortmund - and another, Frankfurt, that could be seen as the country's major traffic hub.

If you're confident your team will win the group, then you'll want to pick Cologne or Dortmund as your base - the trip to Frankfurt for the group game is under 150 miles and even the quarter-final in Hamburg is only just over 200 miles away.  If you think your side will only manage the runners-up spot, then another game in Frankfurt at the quarter-final stage could tip the balance in favour of Germany's banking capital.

Third-placed play-off: If you're bothered, it's in Stuttgart!

Places you won't be going to!
If your team is in group G, you won't be watching them in:

  • Gelsenkirchen
  • Kaiserslautern
  • Nuremberg
