Another of few groupings, this, where you never come back to any of the first round venues later in the tournament - unless you count the third-place play-off in Stuttgart!  At the group stage there's a southern bias, with Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern both in the south west, while Leipzig is just below centre out to the east.

Nowhere stands out as the ideal base.  Of the first round venues, I'd go for Stuttgart, as it would also not be too bad for Frankfurt or Munich if your team wins the group.  As second choice, consider Frankfurt, not a huge distance from anywhere - except Hamburg and Berlin, and nowhere is near either of those cities - and a good hub for all forms of transport.

There's a northern and eastern bias to this set of games.  Hamburg is just inland from the north coast, Berlin way out east (170-odd miles away) and Leipzig is around 100 miles back west - and a bit south - from Berlin.

With both of the other venues for the group games under 200 miles away, choosing Berlin as your early doors base would mean the least travelling (Hamburg to Leipzig is nearly 250 miles).  However, if you think your team will come second in the group, then Hamburg could be your best bet, as you'd back there for the quarter-final and it's nearer to Cologne and Dortmund than are either of Leipzig or Berlin.

Just pick the city you fancy!  Nowhere is going to cut down the mileage you clock up for this set of games!  Munich or Stuttgart probably work best for the group stage (because they're only 130 miles apart), but its' the best part of 400 miles from both cities to Berlin, and none of the group-stage venues are particularly close to Hanover, Cologne or Dortmund for the later games.

So, simply pick somewhere nice: Munich or Berlin!

How far apart are these venues, then!!  Munich (in the south) to Hamburg (in the far north) is 480 miles, Hamburg to Kaiserslautern (in the south west) is 380 and K-Town (as the US troops based there call it) to Munich a breeze at just over 250.

If you are confident that your team will progress to the knock-out stage, then pick Munich or Hamburg, with the latter probably the best bet, as it's a lot nearer to Hanover, Cologne and Dortmund.

Third-placed play-off: If you're bothered, it's in Stuttgart!

Places you won't be going to!
If your team is in group F, you won't be watching them in:

  • Gelsenkirchen
  • Nuremberg
