Hamburg main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) is the main rail hub in northern Germany, as well as being an impressive piece of industrial architecture. Opened in 1906 and refurbished in 1991, the enormous main hall is crowned by a massive, arched glass roof 460 feet wide, the largest structure of its kind in Europe.
Location
As are most main railway stations in Germany, Hamburg's is located slap bang in the middle of town, just a few minutes walk from the Inner and Outer Alster lakes. The route to the stadium from the station is via the underground and then a shuttle bus for the final few hundred yards (see City centre to stadium).
Local transport
Hamburg has a very efficient local transport service made up of an underground system (U-Bahn), a light urban rail system (S-Bahn), an integrated bus network and ferries on the city's waterways (Public transport planner).
