Trivia To date, 1. FC Nürnberg is the only club ever to get relegated as reigning Bundesliga champions.  After winning the title in 1968, the club was promptly relegated at the end of the 1968/69 season.  In doing so, 1. FC Nürnberg also set the record, which they held for many years, for being relegated with the highest points total.
Famous players Most of 1. FC Nuremberg's stars come from the club's glory days many years ago.  Since 1990, for example, only 3 Nuremberg players have played in the German national team.  The highest profile of these was goalkeeper Andreas Köpke.  With one or two interim spells elsewhere, he played 346 games for Nuremberg between 1986 and 2001 (scoring 2 goals!).  He played 14 times for Germany and was a member of their World Cup winning squad in 1990 and European Championship winning squad of 1996, where he was voted 'Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament'.  In 2004, he became goalkeeping coach to the national squad, after manager Jürgen Klinsmann sacked the previous coach, ex-Bayern Munich 'keeper Sepp Maier, for publicly insisting that current Bayern 'keeper Oliver Kahn was the country's number one, despite Kahn's on-going duel with Jens Lehman for the no. 1 shirt that Klinnsman was promoting and saw as healthy competition.
