in front of a crowd of 100,000 in Berlin's Olympic Stadium, when a very young Hanover team beat Schalke 04 in extra time of a replay of the championship final. World Cup winners trounced The club's second championship, in 1954, was also sealed against supposedly superior opposition, with the Kaiserslautern team trounced 5-1 in the final containing no less than 5 players who would go on to play in Germany's World Cup winning side that summer.
Ralf Rangnick - took 96 up in 2002		Notable names Having dropped into the third flight Regional League in the year of their 100th anniversary, Hanover 96 were helped back into full-time professional football in part by goals from a young Gerald Asamoah (pictured above), who, after moving on to Schalke 04,  went on to become the first African-born player (he was born in Ghana) to represent Germany.  He has since become a regular member of the German national squad.
Four years after Asamoah's goals helped to get Hanover 96 back into the second division, the coaching and management of Ralf Rangnick (above) led them back to the top flight.  Sacked in 2004, he went on to manage Schalke 04.
