Munich - Down in deepest Bavaria
 |
| Munich's location within Germany |
Munich is the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin & Hamburg, and capital of the Free State of Bavaria, the largest German state in terms of geographic size. To the east and south respectively, it borders the Czech Republic and Austria.
World Cup distances
In terms of driving to other World Cup 2006 venues, six of the host cities are more than 350 miles away from Munich, with Hamburg in the far north almost 500 miles away. Only 2 of the other venues, Nuremberg and Stuttgart, are less than 200 miles from Munich.
The remaining three (Kaiserslautern, Frankfurt and Leipzig) are each around 250 miles from the Bavarian capital.
If you're driving to Munich for a match, the ground is easy to access, as it is right next to the intersection of A9 and A99 motorways to the north of the city. For directions from the motorway to the stadium see our 'City centre to stadium' page.
While in many cases the distances involved are substantial, the German autobahn network at least provides good road links to the other World Cup venues.
