Schönefeld airport railway station - Bahnhof Flughafen Berlin Schönefeld – is located about 100 yards from the airport, with mainline and metro trains running into the centre of Berlin.

Walk, bus or buggy
You can walk along a wide pavement to the station (if the weather's good), take the free shuttle bus or - if you're lucky - hop on one of the golf buggies that run up and down to the station (sometimes!) and are on the face of it free (but the person driving will almost certainly expect a tip!).

Local transport
Metro (S-Bahn) lines S9 and S45 run through the station (more details), as do mainline trains, including the Airport Express (not actually a separate train, but rather a number of mainline trains covering other routes that take on the Airport Express name for the section between Schönefeld and central Berlin.  Click here for directions from Schönefeld to the Olympic Stadium.

U7 on the way?
To reflect the enlargement of Schönefeld into Berlin's main airport, Berlin Brandenberg International, it is possible that the U7 underground line will be extended to Schönefeld - but don't hold your breath!

Location
Schönefeld is to the south east of the city, in the former East Berlin.

Mainline Services
While this station is likely to be your link between the airport and other parts of Berlin, it is also served by trains going to and from other areas of Germany.  These include direct trains to/from 7 other World Cup venues as follows:

  • Frankfurt am Main, c. 5 hrs 20 mins
  • Hamburg (Aarhus and Hamburg trains), c. 3 hrs
  • Dortmund, (Dusseldorf trains) c. 7 hrs 15 mins
  • Hanover (Amsterdam trains), c. 2 hrs 20 mins
  • Leipzig, c. 1 hrs 15 mins
  • Munich, c. 7 hrs

Local sights
This is not really touristville!  If you've ever heard of the Captain of Köpenick, then the lakeside town of that name is just a couple of miles away, and if you're into gargantuan Soviet war memorials, then the massive monument in Treptower Park, is also down towards this corner of south east Berlin
